Strong ties in a small world

چکیده
This paper examines the celebrated ‘Strength of weak ties’ theory of Granovetter (1973). We examine two hypotheses implied by the theory: one, for any three players with two links present, the probability of a third link being present is increasing in the strength of the two ties, and two, the removal of a weak tie breaks more shortest paths than the removal of a strong tie. This paper tests these hypotheses using data on coauthorship among economists. Our data supports the hypothesis of transitivity of strong ties, but it rejects the hypothesis that weak ties are more crucial than strong ties. We then propose an explanation for the strength of strong ties which builds on two properties of the network: one, significant inequality in the distribution of connections across individuals and, two, stronger ties among highly connected individuals. ∗Dpto. Networks of strong ties
Social networks transmitting covert or sensitive information cannot use all ties for this purpose. Rather, they can only use a subset of ties that are strong enough to be “trusted”. This paper addresses whether is it still possible, under this restriction, for information to be transmitted widely and rapidly in social networks. We use transitivity as evidence of strong ties, requiring one or mo...
متن کاملThe Navigability of Strong Ties: Small Worlds, Tie Strength and Network Topology
We examine data on and models of small world properties and parameters of social networks. Our focus, on tie-strength, multilevel networks and searchability in strong-tie social networks, allows us to extend some of the questions and findings of recent research and the fit of small world models to sociological and anthropological data on human communities. We offer a ‘navigability of strong tie...
متن کاملThe Place of Desecuritization in the Relations between South Korea and the Islamic World
Objective: South Korea’s relations with the countries of the Muslim world can be seen as having mutual and common interests for both sides. Relationships that are remarkable in the context of relations between a middle power and a great civilization, but in many cases have been challenged due to the considerations of great powers, especially the securitization of issues in the ...
متن کاملDetecting Strong Ties Using Network Motifs
Detecting strong ties among users in social and information networks is a fundamental operation that can improve performance on a multitude of personalization and ranking tasks. There are a variety of ways a tie can be deemed “strong”, and in this work we use a data-driven (or supervised) approach by assuming that we are provided a sample set of edges labeled as strong ties in the network. Such...
متن کاملThe conundrum of functional brain networks: small-world or fractal modularity
The human brain is organized in functional modules. Such an organization poses a conundrum: modules ought to be sufficiently independent to guarantee functional specialization and sufficiently connected to bind multiple processors for efficient information transfer. It is commonly accepted that small-world architecture may solve this problem. However, there is intrinsic tension between shortcut...
متن کاملThe NPV of Bad News
We explore the effects of individualand network-level negative word-of-mouth on the firm’s profits using an agent-based model and specifically, an extended small world analysis. We include both permanent strong ties within the social network, and changing, often random, weak ties with other networks. The effect of negative word-of-mouth on the Net Present Value (NPV) of the firm was found to be...
